PRESENTATION
Alwyn McDowall is a Business Development Specialist for Nucor Skyline in the Southeast covering Florida and the Caribbean. He has over 17 years of design experience specializing in steel pile (sheet piles, Combined Walls, H-piles, Pipe Pile, Micro Pile, Threaded Bar) design in retaining walls, bearing piles and other related foundation and retaining wall applications. He graduated from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 2002 with a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He has provided technical support to NucorSkylines products for numerous projects throughout the country. ABSTRACT : Sheet piles have been used successfully as barrier and containment walls in many applications such as: levees, soil remediation sites, dikes, berms, cofferdams, underground basements and underground parking garages. The sheet piles are themselves impervious and the joints of the sheets can be made water tight as well as preventing the flow of water and other fluids or contaminants from one side of the wall to the other side. The presentation will cover the following topics: 1) Sheet Pile Types: NZ and AZ Sheet Piles, and HDPE: Environ PE30 Sheet Piles 2) Installation Methods 3) Permeability of Sheet Piles 4) Options for Making Sheets Impervious and Watertight: Bituminous Sealant, Water Swelling Sealant, and Seal Welding the Joints, and 5) Durability of Steel Piles. WHO SHOULD ATTENDCivil engineers, highway engineers and contractors that design or construct cofferdams, retaining walls, excavations, containment facilities, etc. using sheet piles.
