MAY 16, 2001 - Foundation Movement in Residential Property

Our presenter at the May meeting was Art Koenig, P.E., of MDI Labs in San Antonio, also a member of the FPA and the Structural Committee. In his presentation of a multi-year study of foundation movement of a residential foundation, Art showed us the importance of using a driven or drilled isolated rod below the active zone for a benchmark when correlating foundation movement of foundations.

Unacceptable benchmarks as explained by Art are trees (moved 4 1/2" over one year), manhole covers (moved 2 1/2" over one year), curbs (also moved 2 1/2" over one year) and light pole foundations.
