Being an Expert Witness. What You Need to Know

Speaker: Karen White, Attorney with Karen L. T. White, P.C.,Tel. 832.646.4667
imgMs. White has practiced construction law for over 20 years here in Houston.  She began her practice at Vinson & Elkins, L.L.P. in 1989 and was a partner there until February 1, 2011, when she started her own firm.  Ms. White's practice has included representation of owners, contractors, and design professionals in construction contract dispute resolution and litigation, as well as architects, engineers, and owners in contract negotiations.  Ms. White graduated from The University of Texas, earning a B.S. in architectural engineering (with a focus on construction management and project management, with a minor in geotechnical engineering) in 1982, a M.S. in engineering in 1984 (construction engineering, project management, and geotechnical engineering), and a J.D. with honors in 1988 (Order of the Coif). She is a member of the Construction Law Section, Houston Bar Association; the Construction Law Section, State Bar of Texas; and the Construction Law Forum, American Bar Association.

To a room of about 70 at HESS, Ms. White presented an extensive amount of advice on how to be an expert witness. She also provided substantial coaching on how to prepare for and present depositions. Much of her presentation was applicable to all facets of investigations, including reports, presentations, opinions, testimony, and depositions. Essential technical skills and experience were outlined along with personal appearance. A very informative part of the presentation was a discussion on methods used by attorneys during depositions and trials. The information provided foreknowledge of tricks, traps, methods and pitfalls.

Ms. White’s education as an engineer was very obvious and helpful when she presented the importance of technical expertise and experience.
